Anthrax
Fireball Ministry

Venue:

Beacon Theatre
October 2, 2004

Dio was pretty pissed about the curfew at the Beacon Theatre. Surely he knew what the curfew was when the venue was booked. He could have certainly skipped the drum solo and the guitar solo in order for “Last in Line,” “Rainbow in the Dark” and “We Rock” to be played. He definitely could have started the show at 7:00 rather than 7:30. Either way, despite the cut encore, Dio’s show took the audience back to the 70’s and 80’s when a metal show had band members with long hair, Marshall amp stacks, singers who sing and guitar and drum solos.

The backdrop was even a take back to the late seventies or early eighties with a ridiculous looking demon holding a crystal ball. It was the kind of tapestry that would hang in some stoner’s room that wouldn’t look as cool as it did when high. Dio played of mixed of old, new, Sabbath and Rainbow. “Gates of Babylon” was received with thunderous applause as it was apparent the audience had waited sometime for that gem to be played.

It was interesting to see how Dio would stand against Anthrax’s highly energetic performance. The metal-thrashing mad moshers had people moving despite the seats. John Bush had pumped the crowd up so much that not only were the fans thoroughly warmed up, they needed to cool down during Dio’s set. A surprise appearance by Chuck D and a performance of Public Enemy’s “Bring the Noise” highlighted the set, especially since it probably won’t be played on other dates.

Opening act Fireball Ministry certainly deserved a sound check. Nonetheless, these upstarts certainly have sold a few CD’s to those who came early to catch them. They even gave praise to Puny Human, whose drummer Iann Robinson has nothing but great things to say about this band and rightfully so. I’m sure that their headlining tour will include people from the audience.
